Some believe in destiny and some believe in fate, but I believe that happiness is something we create.
Something More, Sugarland
In 2009, I convinced my aunt to join me at Jazz Fest to see a rising country duo called Sugarland. They had a few hits on the radio, and I thought their music was good enough to brave the heat and crowds. Little did I know how profoundly their music—and the journey that followed—would shape my life as someone living with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), commonly known as Brittle Bone Disease.
Falling in Love with Sugarland
From the moment Jennifer Nettles opened her mouth, I was hooked. Her angelic voice paired perfectly with Kristian Bush’s harmonies and guitar work, creating a chemistry that was electric. Even in those early days, their connection on stage was something extraordinary.
After the set, my aunt and I went to the backstage area, hoping to meet them. Although Jennifer and Kristian didn’t make an appearance, I met their bassist, Annie Clements, and a fellow fan, Christy. That was the start of lifelong friendships—and the beginning of an adventure fueled by music, motivation, and shared passion.
Music as a Source of Motivation
Living with Osteogenesis Imperfecta means facing daily challenges. Managing pain, navigating accessibility issues, and maintaining independence require resilience. Music, especially Sugarland’s empowering lyrics, became my anchor. Their songs reminded me that no matter what obstacles I faced, I could find strength, courage, and inspiration to keep moving forward.
One of my favorite lyrics, “Find what it means to be the girl who changed her mind and changed the world,” resonates deeply. It reminds me that we all have the power to rewrite our story, regardless of the challenges life throws our way.
A Decade of Adventures with Sugarland
Over the years, Sugarland has taken Christy and me on unforgettable adventures. We’ve road-tripped through cornfields, braved 100-degree heat in “Sugar Pits” (fan zones at their concerts), and attended events all over the country. From the Houston Rodeo to concerts in Wisconsin, Sugarland has been the soundtrack to some of the best moments of my life.
The fan community, affectionately known as the Sugarcubes, is a family united by a shared love for Sugarland’s music. Even during the band’s six-year hiatus, we stayed connected through social media, supporting each other and celebrating the band’s reunion when it finally happened.
Here we are. We’ve come so far. Let’s leave it better than how we came, don’t be afraid to change. Our love is still the same.
Still the Same, Sugarland
The Impact of Music on a Disabled Artist
As a disabled artist living with a chronic illness, I’ve found profound inspiration in Sugarland’s music. Their songs have encouraged me to pursue my creative passions and push through difficult times. I even had the honor of designing logos and artwork for some of the amazing people I’ve met through their concerts.
Jennifer Nettles and Kristian Bush aren’t just talented musicians—they’re genuinely kind people. They take time to connect with their fans, often commenting on my artwork and making me feel valued. Having role models who care so deeply about their supporters has been a huge motivation in my own journey as an artist and advocate.
Why Sugarland Matters
Sugarland’s music isn’t just entertainment; it’s a source of inspiration. Their empowering lyrics remind us to embrace change, face challenges, and cherish life’s moments. For me, their music has been a constant companion, marking milestones and offering comfort during difficult times.
The Power of Music to Unite
Music has the incredible ability to bring people together. Thanks to Sugarland, I’ve built lifelong friendships, explored new places, and found strength during moments of doubt. Whether it’s the emotional connection in their ballads or the uplifting energy of their anthems, Sugarland creates a community where everyone belongs.
A Thank You to Sugarland
Jennifer, Kristian, and the entire band—thank you for everything. Your music has given me strength and inspiration when I needed it most. You’ve shown me the power of connection, and for that, I’m forever grateful.
For anyone looking for motivation or simply a reminder of life’s beauty, I encourage you to dive into Sugarland’s music. Whether you’re dealing with challenges like Osteogenesis Imperfecta or simply searching for a spark of joy, their songs are bound to leave an impact.
Every breath, it, happens just once.
Lean It On Back, Sugarland
