What does it mean to look up—both literally and figuratively? For me, it’s a question rooted in my experience living with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), commonly called Brittle Bone Disease. As a disabled artist with a passion for art and a life shaped by my disability, I’ve learned that a positive perspective can transform challenges into opportunities. This mindset took shape in a project that went from senior thesis to published book—Looking Up—a collection of stories that illustrate how we can all find joy and purpose in our unique circumstances.
A Thesis That Grew into a Life-Changing Book
In 2011, I graduated from Loyola University New Orleans with a BA in graphic design. For our senior thesis, we were tasked with creating a project that only we could produce—something born from our personal histories and distinct viewpoints. My professors urged me to visualize my “unique perspective,” so I considered poster series, video work, and a large-scale book.
Ultimately, I wrote and designed a coffee table book that encapsulates my life with Osteogenesis Imperfecta:
- Experiences of Living with OI – From everyday challenges to hilarious anecdotes, the book paints a picture of my real-life journey.
- Reflections on Disability – As a disabled artist, I share how my condition shapes my creativity and outlook.
- A Celebration of Resilience – My message? Embrace what you can do, cherish what you have, and never underestimate the power of perseverance.
When I displayed the resulting piece, Looking Up: Lived, Written and Designed by Katherine Klimitas, at our senior class design show, it quickly became a favorite. Soon after, a local publisher offered to produce it commercially, pairing me with an editor to polish the manuscript into a refined, tangible book.
What “Looking Up” Really Means
Looking Up isn’t just about my literal view of the world (I’m 2’7″ tall and use a wheelchair)—it’s a metaphor for staying positive despite physical and emotional trials. While my day-to-day life includes fractures, surgeries, and constant adaptations, it also includes an unwavering sense of gratitude for the gifts I do have, like:
- A supportive family that encourages me, even when I feel like giving up.
- Three mischievous dogs that add both joy and chaos to my routine.
- Close friends who’d drop everything to lend a hand in tough moments.
- A talent for art that allows me to contribute beauty to the world.
