Achieving Goals & Motivation with a Disability

Have you ever set a New Year’s resolution on January 1st, only to let it slip away before the end of January? Are you already lacking motivation by January 3rd? If so, you’re not alone. Many of us start the year with big ambitions, only to feel overwhelmed or lose focus when life gets in the way.

As a disabled artist living with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI), also known as Brittle Bone Disease, I’ve learned that life rarely follows a straight path. Goals shift, challenges arise, and unexpected detours can make us rethink even the most well-laid plans. But instead of giving up, I’ve found a better way to stay motivated and achieve my dreams—one small step at a time.

Forget Resolutions—Focus on Goals

For years, I was an “all-or-nothing” person. Once I broke a resolution, I’d abandon it completely. But I’ve since realized that this mindset doesn’t account for the way life—and priorities—can change.

Instead of rigid resolutions, I set flexible goals that align with my evolving life. These include daily goals, long-term goals, and what I call umbrella goals.

What’s an umbrella goal? It’s your big-picture aspiration—where you see yourself in three, five, or ten years. To achieve these long-term goals, you need smaller, manageable stepping stones as sources of motivation.

For instance, one of my umbrella goals last year was to improve my health after a particularly stressful period. Here’s how I approached it:

Breaking Down Goals: My Journey as a Watercolor Artist and Disabled Individual

  1. Start Small and Build Momentum
My first step was to reduce unhealthy snacking. Transitioning from chips and cookies to dried chickpeas and nuts was tough, but after a few weeks, I no longer craved the old snacks.
  2. Take Gradual Steps Toward Change
Cutting soda cold turkey doesn’t work for me, so I reduced my intake little by little. By focusing on small, manageable reductions, I made real progress over time. And with progress comes even more motivation.
  3. Incorporate Activities You Enjoy
Exercise is crucial for physical and mental health, especially with Brittle Bone Disease. I created a pool routine that was gentle on my body but still effective. Over time, I increased both the duration and frequency of my sessions, proving to myself that progress is possible with patience.

Life Happens: How I Adapt with Osteogenesis Imperfecta

In September, an accident involving my wheelchair and a curb resulted in multiple broken bones, including my jaw. It was a painful reminder of how unpredictable life with Osteogenesis Imperfecta can be. For two months, I couldn’t exercise or stick to my diet.

Starting over was frustrating, but I reminded myself that setbacks are part of the journey. I returned to my goals, adapting them to fit my new circumstances. Now, I’m rebuilding my routine—one small step at a time.

Motivation for Artists with Disabilities: Keep Moving Forward

As a watercolor artist navigating the complexities of art and disability, I’ve found that breaking down goals into smaller steps is the key to staying motivated. Here’s how you can apply this approach to your own aspirations:

Adapt to Life’s Changes
Flexibility is essential, especially when dealing with disabilities like Brittle Bone Disease. If life throws you a curveball, adjust your goals and keep moving forward.

Define Your Umbrella Goal
Ask yourself where you want to be in the next few years. Whether it’s improving your health, growing in your career, or mastering a new skill, having a clear vision will guide your efforts.

Break It Down
Create daily, weekly, and monthly goals that lead toward your umbrella goal. For example, if your goal is to become a professional artist, you might start with daily sketches, weekly portfolio updates, and monthly networking opportunities.

A Disabled Artist’s Perspective on Motivation

As a disabled artist, my journey with art and disability has taught me the value of resilience. Every painting I create is a testament to the power of small, consistent efforts. Whether I’m working on a detailed watercolor piece or rebuilding my strength after an injury, I approach every challenge with patience and determination.

New Year’s resolutions may not work for everyone, but goal-setting can help you stay motivated and achieve what once seemed impossible.
