Looking Up is a glimpse into my world, a world unlike most. Because I spend most of my time in an electric wheelchair due to Osteogenesis Imperfecta or Brittle Bone Disease, I spend a lot of my time looking up. Though the book began as my college senior project, it evolved shortly thereafter into my story, complete with anecdotes, humor, and powerful photography. I wrote and designed Looking Up to help people understand that a disability is only as limiting as you allow it to be. Though we may have to function a bit differently then most, people with disabilities still have many of the same ambitions as “normal” people. I, for example, still want a well-paying job that I enjoy doing, a nice home, and to travel to as many places as I can in my lifetime. I want my hair to look nice and my make-up to be presentable every time I go out. My best friend is probably my dog. Sound familiar? I’d like this book to inspire not only people with disabilities to reach for their goals, but also to show physically functional people that if I can be successful with my added physical challenges, so can they. In my opinion, laziness is not a disability. There is a major difference between not wanting to do something because it takes effort and not being physically able to do something. I hope that my story gives people of all kinds the ambition to make the best of their lives and make a difference in this world. Everyone has that capability if they only try.

The New Orleans Musicians’ Clinic and the New Orleans Musicians Assistance Foundation are two non-profit organizations that work together to provide healthcare to local musicians that normally couldn’t afford it. They often have workshops on topics like how to control diabetes, how to stay hydrated during the festival season in New Orleans, how to keep your blood pressure stable, and on what constitutes a balanced, healthy diet. They partner with several local health groups, including the LSU Health Sciences Center to provide hearing tests, eye exams, mammograms, and other routine procedures to these musicians at little to no cost to them. They even offer alternative treatments, such as acupuncture and Feldenkrais to keep their patients healthy in mind, body, and spirit. The two organizations often host events to raise money to help their causes in conjunction with local musicians. Several of the promotional flyers, cards, and digital images designed by Katherine are below. Katherine also designs any and all e-blasts that they send out to their supporters and patients, as well as any medical forms needed by the clinic for patients to fill out.

AARFID is a 10 year old software company that focuses on RFID and AID solutions. In other words, they are one of the companies that makes identification systems for hotel keys, healthcare facilities, cruise ships, etc. They are in the process of developing an app that allows the facility/hotel to take a picture of their guest with their tablet or cell phone, then link that person's info with their room key/identification card. It's pretty neat! Design for AARFID included website banner images as well as image mock-ups of what the app would look like on several platforms. AARFID also requires layouts for key cards and tickets for their individual clients.
